We usually think of pain as something associated with illness or aging. Often we experience more pain as we get older. Perhaps you have had back pain from a herniated disc. You might suffer from arthritis pain in your joints. There are so many aches and pains that as we get older will interfere with our quality of life and even our ability to perform normal living activities.

Pain can also be a good thing. It helps us avoid doing certain things like touching a hot surface, for example. It also indicates a sudden health event. This woman suffers no pain and researchers are now studying how they have just the gene mutation as a future treatment for pain.

We know Opioids which are often used today to treat pain have many side effects. Often people misuse these medications or get addicted to them.

Aging Can Bring Pain

Research suggests 80% of people in long-term care facilities have at least one condition that is linked with pain. Some long-term care providers and physicians may find it easier to use these pain medications because it is easier than other methods of treatment. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs are also prescribed medications for many types of pain including arthritis. Drugs like Celebrex, ibuprofen (Advil) and aspirin are common but long-term use can have side effects for some people.

For those in long-term care, poorly managed pain can negatively impact the physical and mental health of the individual. The concern for families is the overall quality of life. Quality care providers, either at home or in a long-term care facility, have string guidelines to address pain and quality of life. For those with Long-Term Care Insurance, many policies include professional case management which will help with an appropriate plan of care, find quality care providers, and provide the best quality care available based on the individual's situation.
