Do you think about your joints often? Generally, unless you have pain, you don’t think about them. However, once your pain starts it is hard not to think about them. Once you get older, you can have additional complications, so it is best to take care of your joints as best you can.

Cleveland Clinic’s sports medicine physician Dominic King, DO says your joints need special attention when you are younger.

“Prevention really is the best medicine when it comes to joint pain,” King says.

Here are the top five ways to protect your joints and cartilage that supports them:

  1. Quit Smoking – Smoking cause inflammation, which is not good for your joints.
  2. Drink Water – Instead of energy drinks and soda drink more water since about 80 percent of your body’s cartilage is water.
  3. Lose Weight - Each additional 10 pounds of weight you carry adds 20 to 39 pounds of force to each knee.
  4. Warm-Up Before Exercise – and Cool Down Afterward – Not doing does adds extra strain on your joints.
  5. Listen to Your Body – Muscle Soreness is fine, but if your joints have pain, there is a problem.
