Isn't Long-Term Care Insurance About Paying for Nursing Homes? I Don't Want to Go to a Nursing Home

Updated: October 14th, 2021

There are few people, if any, that want to go to a nursing home. Yet, there are still people who think Long-Term Care Insurance will only pay for nursing homes.

Virtually all tax-qualified Long-Term Care Insurance policies offer comprehensive benefits, including care in your home.

The fact is most long-term health care is delivered at home - not in a nursing home, and most Long-Term Care Insurance claims start with in-home care.

There is a 'progression of care.' However, there are many options outside of nursing homes that are available, and Long-Term Care Insurance will cover them.

Adult Day Care

Adult Day Care Centers (ADCCs) have grown in popularity. Adult Day Care Centers are designed to administer the appropriate care services and companionship for older individuals who need assistance or supervision during the day.

People get dropped off in the morning, similar to child care. These adult day care centers provide for the care recipients' needs. There are various services and activities, including help with eating, taking medicines, toileting, and other basic needs.

ADCCs provide more than just care and related medical services. There are social activities as well, including meals. During the day, people need the most attention, and they get that attention but come home in the evening. ADCCs allow people to delay or avoid a nursing home or other facility.

ADCCs are also used as respite care for individuals who have family members servicing as caregivers.

Assisted Living Facilities

There are more and more assisted living facilities being built every month around the country. These long-term care facilities are less 'institutional' and offer more independence and privacy than a nursing home would offer.

An individual has their own apartment in a facility that provides 24/7 support services when they need them. There is a nurse on duty and trained aides who serve as caregivers helping residents with daily living activities in an environment that allows for socialization and better quality of life within the safety of the facility.

Facilities include a dining room, social activities, and other services. Often, a completely independent spouse will move in with their partner that requires care, and they can live together and ensure the person who needs help get the quality care they need and desire.

Some facilities care for those with cognitive issues exclusively, and they are designed for the unique needs of those who suffer from some form of dementia.

Some assisted living facilities have a wing for independent living that allows independent seniors access to services and the dining room.

In-Home Care

Long-Term Care Insurance provides the guaranteed tax-free resources to pay for your choice of quality care in the setting you desire - including in-home care. LTC Insurance will cover all types of in-home care, skilled, semi-skilled, and homemaker services.

Long-Term Care Insurance, in a way, is nursing home avoidance protection. However, there are situations where a person requires a nursing home.
